Any advice for a young teen who wants to get his writing published?

I'm only 16 and I have been working on this short series for about a year now and i plan on improving it over the next few years. I was wondering if anyone knows where they can get small works published. Any help? Also any help on writing in general?Any advice for a young teen who wants to get his writing published?
Chris Paolini did it (but it was horribly written and very cliche. But let's just forget that for a few moments, shall we?) and you can do it too. Just have teachers help you write and edit, and try getting a friend to help support you in your writing whenever you feel like it is too big for you to handle or the pressure comes down. Just focus on finishing it for now, don't go too beyond your standards because it can get overwhelming.

Next step after you have written it, is to print out many copies and hand them out to teachers, new and old, neighbors, friends, family, sibling's teachers, ect and tell them NOT TO BE SOFT on you and don't fight back the feedback. Listen to it, stare at the red marks, then fix it! Then go back again and repeat the process until you are sure you have everything fixed and you can't get anyone to edit your novel because they are sick of the story.

The next step is writing a letter of query to an agent. You can get an agent by going to your local bookstore (fun, I know!) spend money (whoo!) and a hefty book called The Writer's Market 2008 (Yeah!) and go through each and every agent and cross off the ones that won't publish your novel and the possibilities of the ones that would. Then go to their website and read what they have and if they wouldn't publish your kind of book, make a big X through that circle. You'll have a few names left that you can send your letter of query to (edit, edit, edit that too) and a sample of your novel.

Be prepared to face a lot of rejection and a lot of waiting. Patience is a virtue in this process. They have 10000 of manuscripts to look through and read each day and it is going to take a while for them to get to yours and it might be very well get thrown into the shredder. Just toughen up and if no one will publish your novel, try rewriting it and see what you can do OR you can self publish it (not recomended, but if you are really desperate, then go ahead).

Sooner or later you'll have a bound and printed copy of your written baby called a Novel or in this stage a Book. Then you can sit back, relax, and think of the next novel you are going to write (if you want to go through it again.)

Good luck and keep on writing!Any advice for a young teen who wants to get his writing published?
You might want to invest in a subscription to a magazine called ';Writer's Digest';. It can be found at:

http://www.writersdigest.com/

They also publish a series of books (updated yearly) that list markets where you can sell books and articles. These are very valuable resources. There main book is called ';Writer's Market'; and lists thousands of places you can sell articles and stories.

I believe the have other editions for selling books, poetry, etc., but the Writer's Digest has a little bit of everything in it.
I'm a preteen who does a lot of writing, and I'm wishing for it to be published as well. I can't say I know how to get it published like a book, like hardcover or paperback, but I'm going to make a website (sampa.com is free) and put my stories on there.

Weight loss advice for teens?

Ok, i'm 13 year old guy, about 6' tall and i weigh 247. I've tried starving myself, pills and all that. The only thing that sort of worked for me was the pills but after my friends begging me to stop them and colapsing during track i decided it was time to stop. I recently started runing a mile or two miles a day. I lost about five pounds last week but after resuming the running for a another week i only lost 2 more pounds. Can ya'll give me any advice like any diets fit for teens or maybe anything else i can do? Thanks so much in advance.Weight loss advice for teens?
1.Set goals. You'll be better able to make a realistic weight loss plan if you know how much weight you want to lose.

2.Identify your weaknesses. Are you a bread fiend? Do you have dessert after every meal and every snack? Is McDonald's your second home? Find the weakness and throttle it. It does not own you, you are stronger and cooler than to allow some silly little craving to knock you off your path.

3.Throw away anything you know is tempting. Those cinnamon buns with 500 calories each? Gone. The ramen noodles in your cabinet? Gone. The problem is that this is not always feasible. Often times we are not the only ones in our homes and therefore the call of the food must be withstood. In this case, out of sight truly is out of mind. Put unhealthy, unfilling foods in a drawer or in a cabinet that you rarely use. Put them all together to make a particularly unappetizing sight. Don't place them all in a decorative basket out on the counter. Place them in a drawer. A drawer heaping with pastries rarely looks like anything but a drawer of fat.

4.Eat less, but eat more often. If possible, eat 4-5 meals a day. This helps your metabolism and blood sugar to stay level as well. This does require a change in your schedule. Eat less within 6 hours of your bed time. You're less likely to burn the calories closer to your bed time. It's fine to eat a large breakfast and lunch because your body will be working on burning those calories for the whole day. Large dinners are likely to go unburned and converted into fat.

5.Do not skip breakfast. If you don't have time to prepare breakfast, buy healthy breakfast bars or those smoothies on the go. It is important to eat breakfast to jump start your metabolism and give you energy for the day. Otherwise you will probably end up falling back on unhealthy foods during the day. Yogurt is also known to boost your metabolism.

6.Eat healthy snacks when you feel hungry between meal times. Healthy snacks would be things high in fiber, fruits and vegetables. Avoid high sugar and high calorie snacks. This will help you get nutrients as well as help lower your appetite so you won't overeat during meals.

7.Increase your fiber intake. Fiber acts as negative calories. It's also filling and healthy for your digestive system. Make it a part of every meal.

8.Eat slowly and chew more. Take time to enjoy your meals. This will help you to finish at the same time as others, and you'll not be tempted by a second helping. Also, chewing more will ensure you get the most out of all the food and it will be digested faster. The more you chew, the more your appetite will be satiated.

9.Drink more water every day. Stay hydrated. While you don't need 8 cups of water a day to stay hydrated, it'll make sure you're hydrated as well as cut down on your hunger levels and force you to get a little bit more exercise (trips to the sink, water cooler, water fountain, and bathroom). If you're a heavy soda drinker, permit yourself to only one diet soda per day, maximum. Just one extra soda each day can add 15 pounds. Recently, fizzy drinks, even diet ones, have been said to slow down metabolism.

10.Increase physical activity. There are two ways to reduce net caloric intake: 1) reduce the number of calories in your diet and 2) Increase the number of calories that you burn in your daily activities. Both approaches are usually necessary and healthful and both are effective in losing weight. You can pick and choose which exercise you want to do, depending on your fitness level and drive. For example: walking, jogging, using the stair stepper, using cross training machines, swimming, tennis, and basketball. Weight training (and resistance training) can help reshape your body. The more muscle you have the higher your metabolism will be.

11.Find active friends. Find people that will drag you out to do more active things. It doesn't have to be much, but any exercise even walking around the mall is better than none.

12.Don't get discouraged. After one or two weeks of initial weight loss, it is quite common for your metabolism to slow down as it adjusts to the new calorie count. Stay on course and you'll see results. In some cases, the scale will tell you your weight is barely changing, but you may be gaining muscle weight while losing fat weight. Also make sure to weigh yourself first thing in the morning to try to avoid the fluctuations in weight due to water.

13.Take all advice with a grain of salt. Everyone is going to have some tidbit of information for you. What worked for them might not work for you. Take it all in stride and work with what is getting results for you. Trying to do everything everyone says will only cause overload.

14.Eat more protein. If you choose to go this route, do not cut out all carbs. If you do so, as soon as you start eating carbs again you will regain your weight back. Instead of eating stand alone pasta, throw some meatballs or chicken in. Eat some beans, they are high in protein and very healthy for you. Increase the ammount of protein, but not by too much. The more protein you take in, the more water you should drink as well.

15.Eat less calories. The average woman should eat around 2,000 calories a day and the average male 2,500. There's many ways to reduce the calories you intake. Try not to eat frozen dinners, pizza, or from fast food joints. There's also certain drinks, such as Green Tea that are calorie reducers. Lettuce is another calorie reducer, but be careful because dressing tends to have the calories. Low fat/light vinnegette, balsomic vineger, red wine and vineger are pretty healthy dressings, but do not load it onWeight loss advice for teens?
The perfect way to loose weight and monitor your progress is to use a calorie counter on a daily basis while you diet.

Energy In/Energy Out

Food Intake: 1,200 Per Day

One Pound equals 3,500 Calories

To loose one pound per day, You need to burn your food intake plus your one pound of fat

1,200 (intake) + 3,500 (Outtake) = 4,700 Calories Burn

You must burn at least 4,700 Calories everyday to loose one pound at least. It is very easy to go up and beyond 4,700 calories each day.

Best way to do this is to track your progress on a calorie counter monitor watch. If you do it by the numbers you can loose the weight. It is just a matter of changing the way you think about weight loss.

Once you start wearing your calorie counter you can see the numbers increase and you fill find yourself doing extra things in your day, like tapping your foot while waiting at the light in your car, chewing gum, singing out loud and so on onto of your workout routines. You begin to see that everything you do in your day contributes to the overall numbers needed to loose that pound.

Water Intake/Less Storage

Most people do not get enough water in their system. Water is your body's principal chemical component, comprising, on average, 60 to 80 percent of your weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.

Lack of water can lead to dehydration, a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions. To determine if you are getting enough water use this simple formula.. Take your weight, for example 150 pounds and divide by 2. Take your answer which is 75 lbs and change it to ounces, in this case 75 ounces. That is how many ounces of water you need a day. Your body performs mostly on water. If you make sure you get enough water everyday your body will perform at top notch and your body will no longer have the cravings of junk food. You will have a better performing body system to help you work out and feel better thru out your day.

Good Food

My favorite things to eat:

Avocado Wraps

Simple: Low Carb Tortilla, Half Avocado sliced, alpha sprouts, lettuce, soy bacon...Just wrap it up and eat. You can vary the things you put inside so long as you keep it to approx 4 or 5 items. You want to make sure they are fresh, low calorie and filling. Avocado and mushrooms can replace meats in your meal and still have great taste.

Special K Cereals are fantastic. They have that sweetness that one craves and is so good for you. Calories are low. Great for even just dinner.

First thing in the morning...A Glass of Chocolate Milk. Yup!! Chocolate Milk. We all crave that ';got to have'; item in the morning. Milk is the best thing you can have for yourself while working out. The chocolate (and you can use Carnation Instant Milk for this but I simply use Nestle dry mix) will give you that sweet ';snack'; that you need. If you give your body a little bit of it and its in a control way, you will not crave sweets and junk the rest of the day.

Lean Cuisines

Fantastic food! Each meal is approx 180 t0 380 calories per box. So think about your calories. 1,200...You can still have several of these meals a day and still be under your intake requirements.

It鈥檚 all about the numbers and watching what you take in and what you burn out. And you know what..If you go over your 1,200 mark for food intake...that鈥檚 okay...you simple up your total calories burned for the day by what you took it. So long as you burn off the over all calories to be more than your food intake. Just make sure you stick too it so you can reach your weight loss goals.

Fruits and Veggies

All you want on the schedule listed below.

Bananas are my favorite. They are very filling and can make a meal all on their own.

____

Vitamins

My favorite is ONE A DAY WITH ENERGY...I am in love with this vitamin because I am just like everyone else who loves those quick fix energy drinks. But what people do not realize is that energy drinks can contain 120 to 440 calories in just ONE Can. If you think about it..That is HALF of your allowed calories for food intake. The best alternative I have found is One a day with energy vitamin. Easy to spot, it is packaged in a green label bottle. Just One vitamin a day will give you as much energy as approx. 1 1/2 cans of red bull...WITHOUT the calorie intake.

WoW..now your making progress already because you have made more room in your intake calories for actual healthy food.

_____

Soda/Carbonation

Carbonation is terrible for your system because it bloats your stomach. And when your stomach bloats, your jeans just don't fit. You can drop one pant size simply by NOT drinking any carbonated drinks all together..Take away the bloat and you have instantly just made it one pant size lower. Besides, Sodas dehydrate you and with that One a Day Vitamin, you won't need the Caffeine in the soda and it will also cut out those extra calories that you don't need.

So remove that soda and the energy drinks and just think how much calories you just instantly removed from your daily intake. I normally consume what...four sodas and two energy drinks in one day...that is a total of .... 900 calories. Of what??? Nothing...Those are horrible calories and calories that can be replaced by food which will fuel your body for your day and your workouts.

____

Your Body

Your body is like a computer. You must program your body to do what it is suppose to do so it won't crash and leave you with a virus. Your stomach is only the size of your fist. So think about it right now, Look at your hand and close your fist. Not very big is it. That is how much food you actually ONLY need to eat, each time you eat for every meal. If you eat anything more than that, you will stretch out your stomach which causes overeating and overweight.

What you need to do is eat every three hours, approx 5 to 7 times everyday around the same time. If you are always giving your body healthy and better food choices (the size of your fist) every three hours, your body will know you are giving it food. It will use that food properly. It will not go into starvation mode or store food away for later because it knows...it will get more in three hours. So what does your body do...it flushes everything out of your system because it doesn't need it.. Now it knows...you wont' forget about it and that food is on its way.

____

Walking Buddy

This is the best thing especially for woman. Get a walking buddy. One hour everyday. Just think about how much talking, venting and laughing two woman can do together while walking and yup, you guessed it...it just burns more calories and reduces your stress. You now are more relaxed because you can talk and free yourself of whatever is frustrating you while getting into shape.

Wow 2 miles thats AMAZING! 5 pounds your first week is pretty normal but the two... thats got to be about your diet. Are you still drinking soda, kool-aid, lemonaid... basically any drink with a lot of sugar? That can prevent you from losing weight. I think that the fact that you can run 2 miles means you are getting in shape and just keep running and eat healthy and you'll have a nice body soon enough.
k, i say that you join a sport or start a hobby that you exercise. or even set a goal to run in a mini-marathon. but if you find something fun, it will be less annoying to do every day. i fun exercise is a weighted hula hoop. one minute of vigorous hooping equals running an eight minute mile. and you can do it while watching tv. ask your parents to buy less junk food so its not even at your house to eat. by doing little things every day, you won't even notice how quick you lose weight instead of letting it take over your life.
losing weight should not show dramatic change if you are losing weight in a healthy way. you need to balance out your meals and not deprive your body of the nutrients it needs esp. if you are a runner because more experiences like the collapse you had may occur more often..

if you want to lose weight stay away from sweets, that's a given. keep your body strong by eating meat for protein. also the day before a meet make sure to eat carbohydrates, it will help you survive the grulling process you are putting your body through..

the main thing in eating is just making sure not too eat too much of anything. keep it simple.

another good trick is..

if you feel like your getting hungry drink a glass of water. a lot of times when our body is trying to tell us it is thirsty we confuse it for hunger. Drink an 8-12 oz. glass of water and wait about ten minutes. if you are still hungry grab a light snack like a yogurt or some fruit.
If you lift weigts, the increase in muscle will make you burn more calories. Primarily you should worry about cardio and diet. Try to eat six small meals a day. Never eat until you are full. Try to cut out the sugars and bad fats/ fried foods. Drink lots of water. If you have the time, try to work up to running everyday. Start small with what you can handle and increase slowly. You can start by running three times a week for 15 minutes. The second week you can run four times a week for 20 minutes. Third week step it up to 25 minutes and five sessions. Getting up to an hour a day will take awhile but it will shed some serious wait. But it can't be a modest pace. You're gonna have to work hard. Try to get up to 6.5 -7 mph for an hour. Don't starve yourself.
Losing weight is all about determination. If you want to do it, you can. I think you can. Don't take pills, please dont take pills. You are already running, thats awesome, thats a great start. I wouldn't say you should start lifting because it really stunts your growth.

You need to eat right. If you drink soda..stop. Period. Cut soda out of your life. Even Juices, dont drink too much. Water and LOTS of it. Drink water all day long. ALL day. It makes it so you can't eat as much, and its all gone by morning. You feel full but its all water weight. Keep up the running. Try to mix it up,.. jog a little, sprint a little, speedwalk a little. Cut out any fast food. Cut out burgers if you can, and cut back on Red Meat. Boiled chicken , not fried.

If you can, try to eat six meals a day. Yup I said it. six meals. What you want to do is get your metabolism going at full speed. You want six portionate meals. Not big meals. Don't skip breakfast if possible but dont eat sausage egg and cheese for breakfast either. A fruit shake for breakfast everday is wonderful, and gives you energy for your day. You want breakfast lunch and dinner, thats three meals. inbetween those meals you want snacks. Almonds and peanuts make great snacks.

Don't eat late. If you have to eat a late dinner, eat a small dinner and try to keep red meat out of it. Eat some chicken instead. Lunch shouldnt be heavy either.

Wheat bread instead of white bread. Skim or 2% milk instead of whole milk. Yogurts are great snacks between meals too, as are bananas. Stick with it, you'll see results in weeks if you keep working out too!. Try to stay active throughout your day. If you are bored, go for a walk. Do situs/crunches. Pushups too. If you can't do pushups, start with pushups where your knees are on the ground and work your way up to real pushups in a few weeks.

Don't overdo it and get your rest. Sleep right. If you sleep around the same time and wake up around the same time everyday it helps alot.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Advice for a short teen trying out for track and field hurdles?

(I'm a girl btw) I am in high school and am 14 and a half. (age)

I want to try out for track. I'm strong and fast but am only 5'2';

What advice could you give me, because I really want to do hurdles. How can I train myself to sprint faster and jump higher?

Thanks!Advice for a short teen trying out for track and field hurdles?
Don't worry about jumping higher - work on form and balance. I have coached several short girls into the state track meet and this is what we stress. Most of all, do NOT be afraid of the hurdle - attack it!

Also, work on coming out of the blocks aggressively - many races are lost in the first 10 meters because of poor starting technique.

In the weight room, make sure to concentrate on the core (i.e., abs).

One more thing - work on flexibility. One cannot be too flexible.Advice for a short teen trying out for track and field hurdles?
read ';TQT ...'; (the alleged coach) answer. seems to cover it all.

however, i suspect you could easily gain in height! i personally believe that if you WANT to do this, that in itself means a lot. can you practice on your own, at home? one summer the coach/school allowed me to take some hurdles home which i'd set out in the street (it was NOT a busy street) and practice. i didn't have talent nor speed but did get a bit better. i eventually concentrated on middle and long distances as i did not have jumping ability (nor speed). sounds like you have the speed -- which is a big part of the hurdles!
i am a freshmen also, and im 5'11, although the fastest person in our school is a girl, a sophmore, shes 5'4, she is a beast, she practices at home and already has like 6 scholarships
breath with on ur nose not wid ur moth keep up ur pace practice running cus it takes time

Does anyone know which website I could go to to help teens, like listen to them and give advice?

Hi,

I would like to help teens by listening to them and giving them advice. I feel so many are lost. Could you be knowing which website I could go to and volunteer? Thanks.Does anyone know which website I could go to to help teens, like listen to them and give advice?
Here you are, right here! Can't you tell from the questions in ';Love and Romance,'; etc.?

  • I need advice from mothers with teens?

okay i'm ten weeks pregnant yeah i don't know how to tell my mom.... how would you want your daughter to tell you and how do you think you'll take it. that ur daughter who is an AP student and JROTC cadet is pregnant.... i'm from a very well respected family in Alabama.... so i really don't know how she's gonna take itI need advice from mothers with teens?
Well I'm a mother of only a 6 week old, BUT.

I got pregnant when I was 20, I was also an AP student in high school, and am a 3rd year engineering student in college. Family thought of me as a ';goodie 2 shoes'; When I got pregnant I gave myself a headache for a few days on how I would tell my mother. I just gave up and told her right away one day. I was around 5 weeks. She said she preferred it that way...the fact that I had told her so soon.

So I'm going to tell you to just tell her as soon as possible. The longer you wait the worse she will react. She may be shocked at first but if she is a mother in her right mind, she will do nothing in the end but love and support you. Good luck and congrats.I need advice from mothers with teens?
accidents happen...if your mother is how you say she is then just tell '; mom i know i made a mistake im pregnant and i need help...tell her your sorry..she sounds like a nice women so i dont think she will beat you or put you ont the street..she will be upset and disapointed but that will pass..she is gonna be a grandparent and it may take a few weeks but she will be happy about it...you have to be honest with her and tell her everything ...

    good luck
Try to break it to her as gently as you can. Don't pull the whole ';Okay, I'm gonna tell you something and you cannot get mad, okay?'; she's going to be upset no matter what, so brace yourself for that before you even talk to her. What you basically have to work on is the calming her down with whatever reassurances you may have. You work, you're responsible, you're gonna take care of it, etc.. You could also discuss options you may have. (I'll suggest adoption but, if you chose otherwise that's on you.) Then go from there. Best of luck! Congrats!
No matter how well you word it she is going to be upset. But eventually she will get over it.
Don't just flat out tell your mom, sit her down %26amp; discuss it w/ her. She may be upset, angry, or in denial. I'm 19 %26amp; my dad's baby girl (or was), and he wasn't angry or upset w/ me.. What he told me was, ';I wish you could have waited.'; I told him this on Monday, and heck now he's telling me what to eat, drink, how to exercise, sending me to the doctor.. I'm 6 weeks pregnant. It's not easy to tell them, I'm not working %26amp; a full time college student. Just tell her now.
tell her then say i am sorry and i talke full responsiblilty for what i did

    Advice from adopted teens please!!!?

Do you have issues with your adoptive mom even though she has done the best she could? Do you ever ';put her under a microscope'; and expect more from her than any one else? Thank you for your answer. It will help me alot!Advice from adopted teens please!!!?
though i don have any experience regarding adoptive parents, think the fact that she agreed to adopt me, welcome me into her house, i think its not my place to judge and expect more, you should appreciate what your getting regardless of size, what matters is its been given with love.Advice from adopted teens please!!!?
Well,my ex boyfriend had an issue with his adoptive parents. He said that she would always be over protective, wich isnt too unexpected, but she wouldnt allow him out after 7pm, let him go to the mall/movies/ without an adult,he also had a bedtime at 8pm;he was 14 when i was dating him!

Ive also notice weird behavoir from the father, maybe abuse to the younger siblings, but im not really sure.
Maybe if u take more time looking at the positive in her then the negative. Be happy for what you got instead of wishing for something you don't. Think about this... you got to experience what its like to be loved by a mother regardless if shes ur ';real'; mom or not you could of spent a whole lifetime not ever knowing what that's like.
No...I don't have issues with her...Well, other than the normal ';teen vs. parents'; thing...But other than that, nope. I still %26lt;3 my mom...
i have never meet my birth mom

but she gave my up because she loves me and if i meet her i would thank her alot
May be big mistake to tell your child and now keep Patience my friend,
